JERICHO
Jericó (/JERR-ik-oh; romanizado: Arīḥā; romanizado: Yərīḥō) é uma cidade na Cisjordânia, Palestina; é a sede administrativa do Governatorado de Jericó, na Palestina.
Jericó está localizada no vale do Jordão, com o rio Jordão a leste e Jerusalém a oeste.
Em 2017, tinha uma população de 20.907.
Desde o final da era quando a Palestina era mandatária, a cidade foi anexada e governada pela Jordânia de 1949 a 1967 e, com o resto da Cisjordânia, está sujeita à ocupação israelita desde 1967; o controle administrativo foi entregue à Autoridade Palestina em 1994.
Jericó está entre as cidades mais antigas do mundo, e é também a cidade com a muralha defensiva mais antiga conhecida. Os arqueólogos desenterraram os restos de mais de 20 assentamentos sucessivos em Jericó, o primeiro dos quais data de 11.000 anos (até 9.000 aC), quase no início da época do Holoceno da história da Terra. Copiosas fontes dentro e ao redor da cidade atraem habitação humana há milhares de anos. Jericó é descrita na Bíblia como a “cidade das palmeiras”.
Em 2023, o sítio arqueológico no centro da cidade, conhecido como Tell es-Sultan / Velha Jericó, foi inscrito na lista da UNESCO como Património Mundial do Estado da Palestina, e descrito como a "cidade fortificada mais antiga do mundo ".
