O PIRAMIDION

The pyramidion, carved out of single piece of basalt (often called black granite), is mostly intact apart from a broken corner. With a height of 1.40 metres (4.6 ft) and base length 1.85 metres (6.1 ft), it weighs around 4.5 tonnes (9,900 lb). The bottom edges are undercut to keep the block in position atop the pyramid.
Some 5 years after De Morgan’s work in October 1900 the above pyramidion was
found in the vicinity of the pyramid temple, and in excellent condition. Arnold gives the calculable angle as 54° 30’. Arnold would comment on the condition of the pyramidion; “The good state of preservation of the surface gives rise to astonishment when one consider that the top of the pyramid has demonstrably been exposed to wind and weather up to the Armarna period, i.e. almost 500 years. The erasure of the Amun name in the royal cartouches shows, however, that the pyramidion in the Armarna period was not yet a discarded block in the temple rubble, but was still standing as a monument. For it can hardly be assumed that the persecutors of the Amun name also tampered with shattered monuments that were to be regarded as destroyed anyway. On the other hand, the question arises as to how Akhenaten’s emissaries could know that the pyramidion, when it was still in its place 75m above the pyramidal foot contained the Amun name, and how they could have climbed a rather steep pyramid if it hadn‟t already lost part of its casing.”
The good condition of the pyramidion concerned O. Firchow, who suggested that it may not have been fitted and that the pyramid was unfinished. Arnold would counter that the completeness of the rest of the pyramid complex, rather suggested that it was finished. The condition of the pyramidion is a concern to me; might we not expect more damage to it if it was dislodged and tumbled some 75m? If fitted it had a 1 in 4 chance of being found in the temple area; but the possibility cannot be discounted that the pyramidion always resided inside the temple; protected and easily found by Akhenaten’s men who had easy access to erase the Amun element
out of the cartouches. If we accept De Morgan’s view that the pyramid resembled the Bent pyramid, then it is likely that any pyramidion that capped this upper section would display a shallower angle. (Hamilton, 2020)

Capstone (Pyramidion) of the Black Pyramid at Dashur (1850 BC), also known as Pyramid of King Amenemhat III (1860-1814 BC), 12th Dynasty during Middle Kingdom, ancient Egypt. It was discovered in 1900 AD, during archaeological excavations, by then-director of Department of Antiquities Gaston Maspero, on the east side of pyramid of Amenemhat, a grey block was found sticking out of the sand, which, upon closer inspection, was decorated with beautiful inscriptions. After excavation, pyramidion was transported to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Capstone carved out of single piece of basalt (black granite), mostly intact apart from a broken corner. With a height of 1.40m and base length 1.85m, it weighs around 4.5 tonnes. Bottom edges are undercut to keep block in position atop the pyramid. Four upper faces were polished and inscribed. Side which pointed to east is adorned with a winged sun disk flanked by two uraei. Below, two wedjat represent eyes of king himself. Further down, three nefer signs stand for beauty or perfection. Finally, a sun disk represents god Ra, from which throne name of Amenemhat "Ni-maat-re" extends to right and his personal name "Imen-em-hat" to left. As a whole, composition reads: "Amenemhat beholds perfection of Ra". (archeohistories)
Inscriptions
The four upper faces were polished and inscribed. The side which pointed to the east is adorned with a winged sun disk flanked by two uraei. Below, two wedjat represent the eyes of the king himself. Further down, three nefer signs stand for beauty or perfection. Finally, a sun disk represents the god Ra, from which the throne name of Amenemhat "Ni-maat-re" extends to the right and his personal name "Imen-em-hat" to the left. As a whole, the composition reads: "Amenemhat beholds the perfection of Ra".
Along the bottom of the four upper faces, two lines of inscriptions run:
Eastern Face
No topo há um disco solar
The eastern commences with: (top row) “Words spoken, may the sight be open to the king of upper and lower Egypt, the lord of the two lands, Nimaatre, so he may see the lord of the horizon and his crossing of the upper sky. May it be given the appearing to the Son of Ra, Amenemhat, as a god, lord of everlasting and indestructible. (bottom row) Word spoken, by the sovereign, I have given the beautiful horizon, the Two Ladies (Nekhbet and Wadjet), and he who takes the inheritance of the two lands, so you may rest upon it, which pleases the sky. Word spoken by the horizon: may you rest upon it, which please the sky”.
Northern Face
The northern commences with: (top row) “Word spoken, higher is the Ba of the king of upper and lower Egypt, Nimaatre, than the height of Orion as it joins the Duat. Ra-Horakhty, he makes firm, the Son of Ra, of his body, Amenemhat, who is in the midst of the northern starry sky, and Neith who is content concerning it”. (bottom row - starting from the centre proceeding to the left) The living Horus, great of might, the Two Ladies (Nebty), who inherited the two lands, the golden Horus - enduring of life, the Son of Ra - Amenemhat, given life, like Ra, forever. (back to the center proceeding to the right) The living Horus, great of might, the Two Ladies, who inherited the two lands, the golden Horus, enduring of life, the king of Upper and Lower Egypt, Nimaatre, given life, like Ra, forever”.
Western Face
The western commences with: (top row) ”… the great one, the ribs of Osiris, lord of the Thinite nome, that are under the feet of the good god, the lord of the two lands and of doing, the son of Ra, of his body, Amenemhat. Ptah, who is south of his wall, the lord of truth and the beloved Ankhtawy (the living two lands)… (bottom row) Word spoken by Ptah, given all life, stability, power, to the good god, the golden Horus - enduring of life, Nimaatre. Words spoken by Sokar-Osiris, lord of all the living god, of…”
Southern Face
The southern commences with: (top row) ”Words spoken by, Imiut/Anubis, he who has upon his mountain, and behind the king of upper and lower Egypt, the lord of doing Nimaatre, united with the western desert inside the great shrine. The lord of good offering, who is in it and given it, his inheritance. The lord of eternity and for everlasting. (bottom row) Word spoken by Imuit/Anubis, I have given all places, good, pure and the spirit of the beautiful west to the king of upper and lower Egypt, the lord of the two lands, Nimaatre, commanding to him, may you rest the upon it, word spoken by the beautiful west, may you rest the upon it”.
The name of the god Amen in Amenemhat's cartouches has been erased. If this was done during the reign of Akhenaten in the 18th Dynasty, the pyramidion may have laid on the ground since c. 1350 BC. The relative lack of damage raised the question whether or not it had ever been on top of the pyramid.
A rare intact pyramid capstone; it is one of the few known in existence. The capstone belonged to the Black Pyramid, which was built by King Amenemhat III, c 1850-1800 BC.
The hand carving shows a solar disc with two cobras and outstretched wings (sign of protection) on each side. Below are two eyes (which refers to “seeing”) and below that is the hieroglyph for “beauty” and finally below that is the hieroglyph for the “sun disc of Ra” (the ancient Egyptian deity of the sun). Put that all together and it reads: “Seeing the beauty of Ra”.
Now we move to the left, which reads: “The Son of Ra, Amenemhat (in cartouche), given life forever.”
Now go back to the center and read right: “King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Nimaatre (in cartouche), given life forever.”
The second line reads from right to left: “May the face of the king of Upper and Lower Egypt, Nimaatre, be opened so that he may see the Lord of the Horizon (Horakhty, Horus of the Horizon) when he crosses the sky; may the Lord of the Horizon cause the Son of Ra, Amenemhat, to shine as a god, lord of eternity and indestructible.”
The third line reads from right to left: “The Lord of the Horizon has said: I have given the beautiful horizon of the Two Ladies (Nebty) and Itjijautawy (He who inherited the Two Lands), so that you may unite with the horizon; the horizon has said that you rest upon it, which pleases me.”
